Norsk Oljemuseum

The Norwegian Petroleum Museum is a museum in Stavanger opened in 1999. The museum is approx. 5,000 square meters. The idea of building an oil museum in Stavanger was launched in 1974. The Norwegian Oil Museum Foundation was established in 1980, and since then objects, films, photographs and other material have been collected that document Norwegian oil and gas activities. The museum is Stavanger’s most visited, and in 2006 the museum had 51,464 visitors during the summer (compared with 41,947 in 2005). In 2007, the museum received about 85,000 guests, an increase of 14.3 percent compared to 2006. For a 10-year period from 1998 to 2008, the Norwegian Oil Museum has set a visitor record every year. In 2008, almost 95,000 people visited the museum.
